Bachelor's/ UG : B.Arch SPPU - 2009
Masters/ PG : MSc in Emergent Technologies and Design, Architectural Association London - 2012
Architect Swapnil Gawande comes from a family of Civil Engineers and Architects and hence the fundamentals of ‘Construction’, ‘Design’ & ‘Technology’ were imparted on his psyche since early childhood. His inadvertent inclination towards the creative aspect of the domain encouraged him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from University of Pune in 2009. Further to delve deeper into the aspects of the dominion, comprehension and implementation of technology, and experiment with contemporary and futuristic design methods and strategies, he completed his Masters in Emergent Technologies & Design from the prestigious Architectural Association London in 2012.
He now specializes in generative design methodologies involving computational techniques and advance material sciences and technologies, investigating the potential they hold within the domain of architecture and urbanism. His major interests lie in exploring looped data transitions between digital, analogue and simulative experimentations of material-informed geometries and realise them through advanced digital fabrication techniques. These initiatives are undertaken in his design collective named STUDIO_DRA[AFT] which rigorously implements a Research Based Design Methodology as an effective strategy to provide novel solutions at different scales. They have won several accolades for their radically different designs & fabrication techniques, especially within the fields of Highway Infrastructures, wherein they have designed and executed a good quantum of innovative Toll Plazas, heavy garages, steel structures with complex geometries and allied facilities. For instance, STUDIO_DRA[AFT] is the proud Architect of the iconic Toll Plaza on Eastern Peripheral Expressway of Delhi.
With keen interest in academics and an intention to bridge the gap between industry and academia, Swapnil Gawande has been associated with the prestigious MKSSS’s Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture’s Department of Digital Architecture as an Assistant Professor since 2012. Here, he has been instrumental in re-structuring the course syllabus and content for M.Arch (Digital Architecture) Programme and setting up the only Digital Fabrication Lab (DFL) exclusively well-equipped for Architecture students and professionals in the country. He has also been key to successfully materialize the conduction of two Architectural Association Visiting Schools (AAVS) named ‘BioMoprh’ in collaboration with BNCA in 2016 & 2017.
Swapnil Gawande is also actively involved in conducting lectures, seminars and collaborative workshops on ‘Digital Architecture & Fabrication of Geometrically Complex Structures’ and has also been invited as an eminent Speaker to showcase his works at several national and international institutes and platforms. As an avid reader and writer, he frequently contributes to numerous magazines and journals within the domain of Architecture, Engineering, Design & Construction.
