MAHARSHI KARVE TROPHY and KALE AWARD 2009

BACKGROUND OF TROPHY

This Trophy & Award has been instated by Ar.Vijay Kale of New York in the fond memory of his parents, late Mr. Trimbak and late Mrs. Manorama Kale. Ar.Vijay Kale was introduced to, Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS) and Dr.B.N.College of Architecture (BNCA), by his close friend Prof. Uday Chipalkatty, a senior faculty member of BNCA, in the year 2000. The inaugural competition was held in the year 2001 and the award ceremony of the same was on the last Monday of January 2002.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Our college DR.B.N.College of Architecture for Women, established in 1994, is run by a 110 year old Institution, Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, and has been so  named in the fond memory of Dr.Bhanuben Nanavati, wife of an eminent industrialist from Mumbai, the late Shri Mahendrabhai Nanavati,  whose substantial donations helped greatly in establishing our college.

THE MISSION

The objective of this competition is to open up an opportunity, for students of Architecture to participate in healthy competition within set parameters and aspire to achieve levels of comprehensive Architectural Design solutions and presentations acceptable at the global level.

ELIGIBILITY

Since the beginning of 2006-07, the scope for participation has been extended to students of Architecture studying in any recognized Institution affiliated to any of the universities in India, including Deemed Universities. All other rules and regulations governing the eligibility shall remain unchanged.

The last Architectural Design sessional work assignment tackled by 4th/5th year B.Arch  students  during their 5 year Degree course,(Sem.VIII 2008-2009/Sem.IX 2009-20010 as the case would be depending on the syllabi of  individual institutes/Universities).

SELECTION

The Competition is in two stages. In Round I, TEN best designs amongst all the participants shall be short listed, by a jury of 5 eminent award winning Architects, who shall judge the entries purely for their Architectural Design quality, irrespective of the complexity/size/variety in the different design briefs.

The 10 short listed candidates will be given time to comprehensively improve upon their Designs covering all aspects such as Architectural, Structural, Services, Landscaping and Interiors, leading up to a total Architectural Design solution. The candidates will then present their designs in Round II before a Grand Jury comprising of 3 Architects, one Structural Consultant, one Services expert, one Landscape designer and one Interior designer, all of whom shall be award winners/personalities of repute in their fields.

SCHEDULE

Online Registration forms & Instructions shall be available to all interested candidates on the BNCA website www.bnca.ac.in from 15th Sept .2009 to 2nd Nov. 2009.

(The registration form can be downloaded, duly filled in all respects , with signature & seal of the Principal of the college as authentication . The completed form should be forwarded to Dr.B.N.College of  Architecture for Women, Pune- 411 052  along with the registration fees of Rs.500/- per entry, in form of a demand draft drawn in favour of Dr.B.N.College of  Architecture for Women, Pune, payable at Pune.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Round 1 requirements :

The submission for this round shall be as detailed below:

  1. Report (write up) on A4 size paper giving the following details:
    1. Design Brief
    2. Concept.
    3. Design Approach
    4. Any other points to explain the proposal.
    5. Seal & signature of the Principal authenticating the Report.
  2. A CD of the total design proposal containing the following:
    1. Site plan indicating topography, climate, surroundings, socio-cultural/historic references if any.
    2. All floor plans, Elevations and sufficient Sections, views, sketches etc. to explain the scheme, with text in Font size, which shall be legible/visible from a 5m distance after projection from a LCD projector.

Note 1 :

The students are not required to be present during the 1st round Jury. On declaration of results of round 1, the 10 short listed candidates will be informed and given about 4 weeks time to further work on their designs, for presentation to the Final Jury.

Only the top sheet of the Report and the cover of the CD shall contain the Name of the Student and his/her college. Name/identification appearing anywhere else on the presentation, shall disqualify the candidate.

Note 2 :

All the Presentation shall be on CD 0nly, as per the details given below:

  • The presentation shall be in Power Point Show (PPS), MS Office 2007.
  • All images saved/inserted in PPT should not be more than 100 dpi each. Each image file size should not exceed 150 Kb each.
  • While saving PPT, use - Tools- Compressing Pictures and Choose for Web/Screen option and then save the file.

Round 2 requirements:

The Ten(10) Short listed candidates are expected to present their project through computers/multimedia projection only, and their original drawings and models ( which will have to be produced by each participant at the final jury ) shall be for additional support/reference if required by the jury. The finalists shall and must present their entries in detail, under the following heads:

1.Architecture,

2.Interior Design,

3.Landscape design,

4.Structural design and

5.Services.


The Panel of Jury members consisting of 3 Architects, and one each from the other four specialist area, shall assess, and judge the candidate in their own fields of speciality and mark the candidate individually. The final tabulation of these marks shall decide the winner. The participant has to be sure to bring along all digital data absolutely ready for presentation. The Institute shall provide the facility to project the data alone. No other facility shall be extended.

Each participant will be given a time period of 40 minutes to explain his/her complete project. This shall include time required for setting up LCD and slide projectors etc. A Question & Answer session (20 minutes approx.) shall follow every presentation.

Result of the competition shall be declared, directly on stage, during the Awards ceremony on Monday 25th January 2010. Venue of the ceremony shall be notified in the press as well as through electronic media ( BNCA website and E mail to the participating students, in due course of time ).

* All ten shortlisted candidates shall get a certificate.

* Top three candidates shall get a trophy.

* The Winner only shall get  US $ 1000.

Please Note :

  1. The name of the candidate and his/her institute shall appear strictly only on the cover of the CD and Report, Portfolio and model . No identity marks to be seen on any other part of the total presentation. If identification marks are seen elsewhere, the candidate shall be disqualified.
  2. The identity shall be masked and coded by the organizing institute, before presenting to the jury.
  3. The jury's decision as regards rating of submissions and the awards shall be final and no complaint or argument in any form shall be entertained.
